Son of Thomas Brown Van Eaton and Caroline Serepta Poyner. Married Eleanor Antoinette "Nettie" Hopkins on the 25th of August 1877 at Sheldon, Lyon County, Iowa. They had 10 children.

In the spring of 1888, quite a company started from Nebraska heading to Washington. "Hi" James Hiram Van Eaton was wagonmaster. "Nettie" Eleanor Antoinette followed.
In the company were Nathan and Sarah Williams and their children Charlie, Tom, Carrie and Clyde; Tom and Nora Van Eaton, Bill and Rose Stone; Mr. and Mrs. Lizer and daughter Cora; Mr. Minthorne; Godfrey Webster; and Mr. and Mrs. Demerest. The rest all drove horses.

James and Eleanor came with Jesse Hopkins family from Alliance, Nebraska in a wagon train. They started in June 1888.

In 1895, James was listed as a stage driver.

Organized a branch of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he was the presiding elder in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Shortly after Guy took his family in 1916, James Hiram and Nettie moved their two grown children Rose and Ben to Saskatchewan, Canada. Hiram and Nettie were in Canada until about 1922 when they moved to Yakima, Washington (601 South Third Street).
