Obituary - RIVERDALE, Idaho - Lella Alida Neeley Smith Godfrey, 88, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at the Franklin County Medical Center in Preston.

She was born Feb. 7, 1911, in Riverdale, Idaho, the daughter of Orville and Laura Alida Peterson Neeley. She married Elroy Walker Smith on July 13, 1929, in Soda Springs, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1962. She married Oleen L. Godfrey on April 25, 1978, in the Ogden Temple. He preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 1989.

She was a member of the LDS Church, serving in the MIA, Primary, Sunday school and Relief Society. She was a Single Adult Leader at the ward, stake and area levels. She taught genealogy and was a visiting teacher supervisor in the Riverdale Ward at the time of her death. As an LDS temple worker, she served in the St. George Temple clothing department for 10 years, and she worked in the Logan Temple for the past four years. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers in St. George, where she served as docent at the museum, and in Preston, where she was the president of her camp at the time of her passing.

An accomplished poet throughout her life, her poems won many awards and were widely published. After she was widowed in 1962, she worked at King's in Preston for seven years and then was elected Franklin County Treasurer for two terms. After her marriage to Oleen Godfrey, she earned certification as a social service aide at Godfrey Foothill Retreat in Brigham City, Utah. She traveled with Oleen by motor home from Canada to Southern California to New Orleans, and they visited his son in Hawaii many times.

She is survived by five daughters and three sons, Mignon (David) Jensen, Montpelier, Idaho, Marlene Chatterton, Henderson, Nev., Karen Serrano, Lake Stevens, Wash., Dalan E. (Judy) Smith, Montpelier, Idaho, Kelvin N. (Ann) Smith, Pocatello, Idaho, Joel D. Smith, Blackfoot, Idaho, Star Coulbrooke (Mitch Butterfield), Smithfield, Utah, LeeAnn (Clyde) Gilbert, Preston, Idaho; two stepdaughters and three stepsons, Joleen (David) Balls, Brigham City, Utah, Deanna (Victor) Fuhriman, Ogden, Utah, Michael Godfrey, Brigham City, Utah, Jerry (Jeannie) Godfrey, Brigham City, Utah, Robert (Gayle) Godfrey, Providence, Utah; 21 grandchildren; 18 step grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Nina (Roland) Struve, Martinez, Calif., Carol Bennett, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Marie Davies, Lithia Springs, Ga., Emma (Richard) Bigelow, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Lauradene (Myrl) Lindsey, Bountiful, Utah, and by a sister-in-law, Esther Neeley, Grace, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her two husbands; by a son, Norman Verl Smith; and by a brother, Verl O. Neeley.

Funeral services will be at noon Monday, March 29, 1999, in the

Riverdale Ward Chapel with Bishop Sam Smith conducting. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Webb Funeral Home and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Riverdale Cemetery.
