Marie M. Ebnet, age 62 of Big Birch Lake/ Melrose died on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003 after a courageous seven month battle with cancer. She died peacefully with her friends and family at her home. Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, Sept. 18 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vincent Lieser officiating. Inurnment will be at the Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date.

Marie Ebnet was born on Nov. 16, 1940 in Richmond, Minnesota, to Albert and Elizabeth (Egerman) Backes. She was united in marriage to Michael "Mick" Ebnet on Dec. 27, 1962 in Farming, Minnesota. Marie graduated from the Albany High School in 1958. She attended St. Cloud School of Nursing and received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State University. She was employed at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud Veterans Hospital and was a nursing instructor at St. Cloud Technical College for 25 years. Marie resided in Albany and at Big Birch Lake. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, painting pictures, gardening, playing piano, antique hunting, fishing and deer hunting. Marie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose.

Survivors include her husband, Michael "Mick" Ebnet of Big Birch Lake; daughter, Karen Stauber and her husband, Tom of Chanhassen; grandchildren, Anna, Ted, Tony and Abraham; brothers and sisters, George Backes (Gloria) of St. Cloud, Gene Backes (Ella) of St. Cloud, Esther Bien of North Lake, Illinois, Florence Patterson of Dallas, Georgia, Irene Plantenberg (Ed, Jr.) of Richmond, Rosalie Thomes (Dick) of Richmond, Joan Gerber (Bob) of Minnetonka, and James Backes (Carol) of West Union.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Elizabeth Backes; daughter, Kathleen Elizabeth Ebnet on Dec. 21, 1984; brother, Carl Backes; sisters, Mildred Schulte and Melda Spaeth.

Casket bearers were Marie Silbernagel, Joan Budde, Sylvia Mertens, Marge Hinkemeyer, Floss Dinndorf and Joan Wander. Tony Stauber served as the cross bearer and the scripture bearer was Ted Stauber. Gift bearers were Anna, Ted, Tony and Abraham Stauber. Memento bearers were Anna and Abraham Stauber.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Service of Melrose.
