Eugene L. Backes, 81 of St. Cloud passed away peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Ridgeview Place in Sauk Rapids. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held to celebrate Gene and his wife Ella's lives at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Reverend Mark Innocenti will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and also from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Gene was born on April 28, 1932 in Farming, Minnesota to the late Albert and Elizabeth (Egerman) Backes. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Agricultural School. He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956. Gene married Ella Schunk on October 15, 1955 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Gene was a bricklayer by trade, working mostly in the St. Cloud area, retiring in 1994. He was a skilled craftsman and took pride in creating precision projects such as brick murals, archways and custom fireplaces. He was a member of St. Michael's Parish, the Waite Park American Legion Silver Star Post #428, St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622 and the Bricklayers Union.

Gene will be remembered as a family man who treasured time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a talented wood worker and all around handyman.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Barbara Backes of Phoenix, AZ, Terri Backes (Mike Lindgren) of Cumberland, WI, Bonnie (Ron) Stock of St. Cloud, Nancy Backes of Maplewood, Amy (Jeff) Rowe of Rosemount; grandchildren, Jordan, Matt and Kayla Stock, Kelly and Doug Rowe; brother, Jim (Carol) Backes; and sisters, Esther Bien, Florence Patterson, Irene Plantenberg, Rosalie Thomes and Joan Gerber.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Ella on January 7, 2014; brothers, George and Carl Backes; and sisters, Mildred Schulte, Imelda Spaeth and Marie Ebnet.

Gene's family would like to thank Ridgeview Place and St. Croix Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
