Our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Walter Lewis Underwood, passed away at home on Oct. 31, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born to Walter Lewis Underwood and Mabel Jessie Lucas, on Feb. 11, 1922 in Ogden, Utah.

Walt grew up in Ogden, graduating from Ogden High School in 1940, and after attended Weber State College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1942, where he served as a Second Lieutenant and a Bombardier. He flew in B-17's and on his last mission, as a gunner, his plane was hit by enemy fire and crashed landed in Switzerland where he was taken prisoner.

Walt married his sweetheart, Eileen Bingham, of Ogden, Utah on March 31, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas, while he was still in the service.

He was a surveyor and he retired as a Civil Engineer from Ogden City.

He enjoyed spending time with his sweetheart wife, Eileen and all his family. Also, he loved working in his yard, camping and fly-fishing, going on trips, especially to Las Vegas and Florida and also Hollywood, California to visit his Aunt Addie and Aunt Mayme who he loved dearly.

Walt was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and his wife and all his family loved and cherished him very much, and will "always" love him forever more!

He is survived by his wife, Eileen; his two daughters, Tamara (Harry) Fochtman and Paula (Ed) Love; nine grandchildren, Jamie (Heather) Fochtman, Troy Fochtman, Shawn (Kim) Fochtman, Julie (Mike) Smith, Jill (Thomas) Ramage, Lindy Fowles, Jordan (Erin) Fowles, Dawn Love, Eric Love; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary (Jack) Burchard and Nancy Lucille (Lucian) Mc'Cloud.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary of Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd. The family will greet friends at the mortuary on Wednesday, Nov. 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 11:45 to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be at the Ben Lomond (North Ogden) Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

The family of Walt Underwood would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Manor Care; also to the people that helped from the McKay Hospice.
