YVETTE E DUKE

AKRON, Ohio ‹ Yvette Evelyn Duke, 86, of Akron, Ohio, died Jan. 29, 2000, in Akron.

Born Sept. 18, 1913, in Chillicothe, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Otis O. and Daisy A. (Ayersman) Sterne. The family moved to Cumberland, Md., in 1927, where Mrs. Duke graduated from Allegany High School, class of 1931, and Catherman's Business School. She was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company as assistant cashier in their district office prior to her marriage in 1936. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland.

While living at Twin Lakes in Kent, Ohio, during the time her husband was with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, she was active in many areas of Girl Scouting and was the recipient of the Thanks Badge from the Western Reserve Council in Akron, Ohio, for more than 15 years of service. She was active in PTA, both in LaVale, Md., and Kent, Ohio, also the League of Women Voters in Kent. She returned to LaVale, Md., in 1973, with her husband after his retirement. Following Mr. Duke's death in 1987, Mrs. Duke remained in LaVale for nine years before relocating to Akron where she has lived with her daughter, Linda, and family for the past four years.

Edgar T. Duke, her husband of 51 years, preceded her in death, March 21, 1987, as did a son, Edgar T. "Ned" Jr., July 27, 1940. Also preceding her in death were a sister, Marguerite (Sterne) Wagner; and three brothers, Adam, Carl and Otis Sterne.

She is survived by a son, John T. (Kathleen) Duke of Westminster, Colo.; daughters, Janet D. (Ronald) Beury of Crofton, Md., and Linda D. (Roger) Putnam of Akron, Ohio; sister, Rebecca R. Yeary of Clearwater, Fla.; and brother, Ronald N. (Norma) Sterne of LaVale, Md.; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; eight nephews and six nieces.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, with the Rev. Dr. O. Morton Harris, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland, Md., presiding.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Cumberland, Md.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy take the form of camperships to the Girl Scout Shawnee Council, 955 Frederick St., Cumberland, MD 21502, to be used for local area girls.

The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
