Ronald "Ron" N. Sterne [LaVale]

LAVALE - Ronald "Ron" Neil Sterne, 78, of LaVale, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2008, at the Braddock Hospital.

Born Aug. 11, 1929, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Otis Orland Sterne and Daisy Adaline (Ayersman) Sterne. Mr. Sterne was also preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Ron was a graduate of Allegany High School where he played and excelled in multiple sports. His great accomplishment was winning the state championship in basketball for Allegany High School in 1946-47. After graduation, Ron started at the Cumberland Times Newspaper as a copyboy and in 1989 retired as Composing Room superintendent with 40 years of service. He was a life-member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland, joining the church on March 10, 1943. Ron was a member of the LaVale Lions Club with 25 plus years of service. While serving with the LaVale Lions Club, Ron was proud of his accomplishments having served as past president; zone chairman; awarded "Lion of the Year" in 1977; and won the distinguished Melvin Jones Award in 2007. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge 63, B.P.O.E.; the Cresaptown Eagles; the former Cumberland Moose Lodge; and the A.A.R.P. Bowling League.

Ron was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who adored his family. He was a Redskins fan, enjoyed Maryland basketball and the Baltimore Orioles. Ron was an avid fisher, camper and bowler. He will be sadly missed.

Ron is survived by his wife of 59 years, Norma L. (Raupach) Sterne; his sons, R. Jeffrey Sterne and his wife Virginia, Lexington, Ky., Randall K. Sterne and his wife Sheryl, Cumberland, and Mark L. Sterne, Short Gap, W.Va.; his grandchildren, Bryan Sterne and his wife Anjell, Danville, Ky., Cindy Lowe and her husband Josh, Lexington, Kevin Sterne, Eighty-four, Pa., Sara Sterne and Timothy Sterne, both of Cumberland; his great-grandchildren, Conner Sterne, Danville, and Jacob Lowe, Lexington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and his favorite four-legged pet, Andy.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Thursday, March 6, 2008, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. The LaVale Lions Club will conduct a service on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, March 7, 2008, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. O. Morton Harris Jr. officiating.

Pallbearers will be members of the LaVale Lions Club.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the nursing staff at the Braddock Hospital Intensive Care Unit for the care and kindness given to Ron and his family.
