Alley Henry Strain was born in Georgia (probably Walker County) soon after his parents had immigrated from Lincoln County, North Carolina. He is the son of William Lee Strain (1818-1896) and Elizabeth Bandy Strain (1823-1865). He was married to Martha Annette Cleckler (1854-1891) on 12 March 1874 in Gordon County, GA. He was a prosperous farmer in the Sugar Valley/Blue Springs (now Hill City) area of Gordon County, GA.
At age 14 in 1864, he was the oldest surviving son in the family when they were living in Snake Creek Gap (between Villanow and Resaca) when all of General McPherson's Division passed by their home on their way to the Battle of Resaca. The Union Soldiers camped around their home, took all their livestock and food, and dismantled their rail fences and outbuildings to use for firewood.
Alley and Martha had 9 known children:
1. Rilla Dell Strain (1874-1965) m. Fred Moss Kendrick
