Buddy was the son of George Washington Atkisson and Fannie Brillhart. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 22, 1943 and served as a private in the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th "Blue Ridge" Division. He was killed in action in Luxembourg near the end of the war and was not buried in his final resting place until December 1948.
