Elizabeth was the daughter of Moredock McKenzie and Jemima Chapman. Indians attacked her home in Virginia in May 1778. Her mother and three siblings were killed. Elizabeth and her sister Margaret were taken captive by the Indians, carried by the Indians to their home near the Great Lakes. Elizabeth and Margaret, adopted by different tribes, remained captives for many years.

John Clark and John Kinzie were business partners and traders. They were involved with obtaining the release of the sisters from the Shawnees. Margaret married John Kinzie. Elizabeth married John Clark and they had four children: Sarah, John, Andrew & Mary (twins).

Moredock McKenzie visited Detroit when he learned his daughters were alive, and on his return to Virginia, both daughters left their husbands and returned to Virginia with their father, settling in Giles County. Three of Elizabeth's children accompanied her to Virginia. Andrew stayed with his father in the Great Lakes area.

Elizabeth married Jonas Clybourn (various spellings of last name) 18 Nov 1801 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Jonas was the son of Thomas and Louisa Clybourn. Jonas and Elizabeth had two children: Archibald and Henley.

Archibald left Virginia in 1823 to visit John Kinzie's trading post. John was his aunt's first husband. He was employed by John Kinzie and is considered the second civilian settler of Chicago. His parents soon followed. Jonas and Elizabeth, and other family members, came to Chicago in 1824. Jonas and Elizabeth later moved to Indiana.

Jonas died in 1842 in LaPorte County, Indiana, at the age of 72 years. Elizabeth died in 1838 at the age of 70 years.
