Susan Lewis Brown was a gifted craftsman who could expertly sew and do intricate handwork of every type. She was multi-talented and had an expanded knowledge of antiques and was an interior decorator with classic taste. She was interested in not only her family history but the history of her community. She was active in the DAR and other organizations. She was instrumental in refurbishing the newly relocated Hanover House in Clemson, SC, and designed the crewel work curtain panels in the house to be as authentic looking as possible. Her ancestors were French Huguenots with a connection to the Hanover House. In her younger years, she and her husband, John Hickman Brown, owned a combination antique store and gift shop called "Trade Winds" in Corpus Christi, Texas. They had no children. After her husband died, Susan moved to Tryon, Polk County, North Carolina, where she remained the rest of her life, living next door to her sister, Selena Lewis, who ran Thousand Pines Inn.
