Leverette Leland Cain was the oldest of four children born to Keziah Belle (Thompson) and Horace 'Harry' Levi Cain in Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania.

According to military events written in the Cain Family Bible, "Lev", as he was always known by, was taken into the service of U. S. Engineers on April 4, 1918, 37th Reg. Co. E. His number was 439166. He left for Camp Myer, VA on April 4, 1918, arrived in Liverpool, Eng. in July 1918, left Southhampton, England that same month arriving in Churbourg, France. He arrived in Wasserbilig, Germany on December 1, 1918. He left St. Nagaoire, France in March 1919 and arrived in Newport News, VA. He mustered out in Louisville, KY on April 1919.

Lev married Alice W. Brown in Pittsburgh on 22 September 1920. They had one son, Robert, in 1927 and moved to North Carolina before 1930.

He was an engineer by trade.
