Funeral services for J. W. Cheek, 87, will be held at 4 o’­clock Thursday afternoon at the
First Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Bobby Rine, officiating, assisted by the Rev.
Virgil Drury of Vincent.

Mr. Cheek died at the Johnson Hospital here at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday only a few hours after
being brought here from his home in Midland.

Mr. Cheek was born November 23, 1870, in Smithville, Mississippi and married Miss Codie
Jane Crump there on August 24, 1896. The couple celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary here in August 1952.

The Cheeks moved to Oklahoma Territory from Mississippi in 1902 seeking a higher and
better climate for their health. They lived there to see it become a state and moved to
Loraine in 1927 Mr. Cheek had lived here until 4 years ago when he went to Midland to make
his home with a son and daughter, J. M. Cheek and Mrs. Judson Scrivner.

Mr. Cheek was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and was regular In attendance
until his health failed.

Survivors include two daughters. Mrs. Scrivner of Midland, and Mrs. W. A. McCoy of
McAllister, Oklahoma; three sons. M. D. of Loraine, J. M. of Midland, and Ed of Big Spring.
He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wade Preston, Ed Preston, Gus Scown, Nuke Henderson, Luther Anders
and Harvey Leach.
