Lewis Frederick Hake was the son of John Frederick Hake and Mary Ann Hewitt Hake. His paternal grandparents were Christian Hake Sr. and Barbara Hake. His maternal grandparents were Henry Hewitt and Esther Simon Hewitt

Former Cantonian Dies at Sandusky
"Word has been received in the city of the death of Lewis F. Hake, a former resident of this city, who died Sunday at the Sandusky Soldiers' Home. He was a member of McKinely Post, G.A.R., of this city and was one of the last survivors of the 115th regiment. He escaped drowning when the steamer Sultana blew up in the Mississippi river near Memphis, April 7, 1865.

He was a member of Co. B, 115th regiment of O.V.I, and was taken prisoner on August 13, 1862, being released three days later as a paroled prisoner. He was promoted from captain to major on February 8, 1865, in which capacity he continued until the close of the Civil War."
