BOSWELL, William H.
D.C. Fire Department Chief, 67

William H. Boswell, 67, retired deputy chief of the D.C. Fire Department, died Sunday at Doctors Hospital after a long illness.

A native Washingtonian, he began his fire-fighting career in 1924 and participated in some of the last runs with horse-drawn equipment.

He suffered six major injuries between 1924 and his retirement in 1961.

In 1958, Mr. Boswell doubled as a policeman briefly in an impromptu encounter on Capitol Hill. On his way to a House Appropriations Committee hearing, he saw a robbery in progress at the National Capital Bank, 316 Pennsylvania Ave. SE. He jumped from his car and in full uniform chased one of two suspects into a dead-end alley near the Library of Congress. He caught and held the man there until police arrived. He never made it to the Committee hearing.

Mr. Boswell is survived by his wife, Vesta, of the home, 3001 Branch Ave. SE; two sons, William H. Jr., and Bernard C., both of Oxon Hill; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
