Obituary: Leon A. Ford Dies Following Lengthy Illness
Funeral Services To Be at Norton Tuesday Afternoon
Leon Almon Ford, 75, longtime Norton resident, died at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at The St. Joseph Hosptial in Concordia. Mr. Ford had been in failing health for about 2 years & his condition became critical about 2 months ago. He was taken to the hospital at Concordia, Nov. 30.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2p.m. Tuesday at The Scott-Brantley Funeral Home. Rev. Robert McElderry will officiate. Burial will be at the Norton Cemetery.
Leon Ford was born July 9, 1882 at Wymore, Nebr., a son of Alonzo Almarion & Margaret Elmina (Taylor) Ford. The family moved to Smith County & in 1901 Mr. Ford moved to Norton, which remained his home for the rest of his life. He married Rebecca Jane Burgess at Norton April 3, 1907. The Fords had 7 children, 3 of whom survive. Two sons & one daughter died during infancy. Another son, Robert Leon, died in 1913 at the age of 5. The surviving children are Helen Ford, Mrs. Ivalee Perrill & Raymond Ford, all of Norton. The Fords also raised a niece, now Mrs. Donald Lacy of Fresno, Calif.
Mrs. Ford died Jan. 22, 1955. For many years Mr. Ford was employed by The Allied Transfer Company. He also was employed by the Burlington Railroad for about 6 years prior to his retirement. He served on the Norton Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church. In addition to the children, survivors include 5 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister & two brothers. The sister & brothers are Mrs. Olive Payne of Meriden, Jasper & James Ford of Greeley, Colo.
