Reason Vermillion Powell was, in fact, born in the town of Arabia, in GALLIA County, Ohio, on January 19, 1811. Many incorrectly list his POB as Lawrence County, Ohio, however, that is impossible as Lawrence County, Ohio, didn't exist prior to 1815 - when Lawrence County, Ohio, was created out of parts of both Gallia and Scioto County, Ohio.

Reason was married on June 6, 1833 in Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH., to Delana Price Nance, who was a daughter of Daniel Nance Jr. and his wife Lavina Kingery. Reason and "Lany" (as she was known) had at least nine children. His wife, like Reason, was born in Gallia (in 1814), but she too was born in a part of Gallia County that became part of the newly created Lawrence Co., OH., in 1815, in Buck Creek, Gallia Co., OH.

Reason Vermillion Powell was the son of Henry A. Powell (b. 1785 in N.C. d. aft. Aug. 1, 1860 presumably in Aid Twp., Lawrence Co., OH.) and his wife Pricey Vermillion (b. before 1794 in Virginia d. before Aug. 1, 1860 presumably in Aid Twp., Lawrence Co., OH.). Reason was their first born child. His middle name of Vermillion was his mother's maiden name.

Many people have his year of death as 1879 however that can't be correct as he was recorded on the 1880 Census of Lincoln County, West Virginia as "R. V. Powell age 69 born in Ohio" with his wife "Lany" Powell age 65 born in Virginia".
