He served in Company E of the 5th West Virginia Infantry during the Civil War

Born as a son of Reason Vermillion Powell (1811-1881) and Delana Pricie Nance (1814-1884)

Henry Archimedes Powell was married three times. He was initially married to Emma McKnight on Dec. 11, 1866, in Lawrence County, Ohio. This marriage produced one child, a son named Schuyler, who was born and died in 1869. Emma McKnight was born February 08, 1839, in Lawrence County, Ohio, and she died February 07, 1877, in Lawrence County, Ohio.

After Emma's death Henry A. Powell was remarried, 18 months later, to Sarah Ann Steele on August 2, 1878, also in Lawrence County, Ohio. This marriage also produced one child, a daughter named Grace Powell, born on Sep. 8, 1882. Grace was married to a man named Robert Shepherd and had at least one child - a daughter named Miriam. Sarah Ann (Steele) Powell was born about 1843 and she passed away on Oct. 27, 1891, at Rock Camp, Lawrence County, Ohio.

After the death of his 2nd wife Henry A. Powell was married a third time, roughly 11 months later, to Mariah C. Dillon, on Sep. 19, 1892, in Hamlin, Lincoln County, W.V. This marriage produced two children, a daughter named Lula May Powell, born on July 13 1893 (who later married Elliott R. Neal - son of Marion Neal and Emma B. Langdon, in 1909 in Lawrence Co., OH.), and a son named Rezin Creed Powell who was born on Nov. 2, 1896. Mariah C. Dillon was born in Nov. of 1854 in Ohio and passed away on Dec. 20, 1928, in Lawrence County, Ohio.

NOTE - The Ohio Death Certificate for Henry A. Powell (which listed him only as "H. A. Powell) cited his place of burial as the "Steel" Cemetery. However, the book produced by the Lawrence County, Ohio, Genealogical Society named "Lawrence Township Cemetery Inscriptions Lawrence County, Ohio" shows that he was actually buried in the Webb Cemetery. Perhaps an explanation for this is what was once known as the "Steel" cemetery (keep in mind that Henry's 2nd wife's maiden name was Steele - and she died in 1891) may have later become known (today) as the Webb Cemetery.
