*Mary Bartholomew Hopkins is NOT in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, McLean County, Illinois, no Hopkins are in the sexton list. placed in Clarksville Cemetery. After searching, it is believed that she is indeed buried here. The death year of 1839 is early for this area. The 1840 census lists her husband Patrick Hopkins living near Mary's father Joseph Bartholomew. (1766-1840) also buried in Clarksville. Also, living near is Mary's brother in law Gamaliel Vail, (1803-1844) also buried in Clarksville along with two of his children; Christina, (1832-1832) and John Bartholomew Vail. (1834-1834) Most certainly this family would have buried Mary with these family members. It seems that her husband Patrick later remarried and moved to the Pleasant Hill area, and is buried there. (per Lexington Genealogical and Historical Society. #49407692 - 3/15/20)

Daughter of Major General Joseph Bartholomew & Christiana Pickenpaugh Bartholomew.

In 1820, Patrick Hopkins came back to Clark county and married Mary Bartholomew. During the following year, they moved to Owen County, where he laid brick and worked a small farm. In 1830, he came with his wife and four children to the head waters of the Mackinaw, in what was then Tazewell County, Illinois. He raised a cabin and in the following year broke prairie for a farm. They lived very quietly until 1832, when the Black Hawk war broke out. Patrick went with a company collected by Mary's father Major General Bartholomew, to Indian Grove, where the Kickapoos were encamped, to see whether the latter were disposed to be hostile. In the spring of 1833 Patrick put up a log cabin in Lexington township, on the farm now known as the Lemuel Biggs place. Mary died August 29, 1839. She was a very kind lady and their marriage was a happy one. They had five children, one of whom was born in Illinois. They are two sons and three daughters, and are all married.
