Geneva Tullos "Tom" Barnes, of Athens, formerly of Opelika, went to be with Jesus Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at South Place Nursing Home where she had been cared for lovingly for the last year.
Her funeral will be arranged by Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home with family visitation Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m., at Opelika Missionary Baptist Church followed by burial at Red Hill Cemetery near Opelika. Former Opelika pastors Hamp Manning and Donald Thomas and current pastor Wayne Bickley will officiate.
Geneva, one of thirteen children born to Jody Wyatt and Sarah Ann Morrison Tullos of Opelika was born July 22, 1922.
She was a lifelong member of Opelika Missionary Baptist Church and an active member of their WMA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James Horton Barnes; infant son, James Gaylon Barnes; son-in-law, Dale Brooks; her parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Troy and Elsie Tullos; Jim and Martel Tullos; and J. B. Tullos; sisters and brothers-in-law, Birtie and Jesie Stevens; Francis "Pete" and Larence Stevens, Josie and A.V. Stevens, Pearline and Hubert Lewis; brothers-in-law, Teddy Barnes; Jetter Lewis; Cletus Wilson; Alton Dodd; Eddie Paroline; and Robert Godwin; nieces and nephews, James A. Tullos; Eveline Tullos Rainwater; Thelma Tullos Anding; B.W. Stevens; Frances Stevens Osborn; Charles Stevens; Dwight Stevens and Perry Lewis.
She is survived by her daughter, Zita Barnes Brooks, of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Danny James and Paula Newbill Barnes, of Athens; grandson and wife, Christopher Dan and Kimberly Williams Barnes, of Tyler; grandson, Nichoulas Karl Barnes, of Opelika; step-grandchildren, Tara Brooks, of Virginia; Mathew Brooks, of Montana; and Richard Brooks, of Illinois.Mrs. Barnes is also survived by two loving sisters, Virgie Paroline, of Mesquite; and Eva Joe Godwin, of Athens; sister-in-law, Maxine Barnes, of Heartland; nieces and nephews to whom she was "Aunt Tom," Mildred Stevens Kidd; Coleman Tullos; Ronnie Tullos; Mary Ann Stevens McElyea; Phillip Stevens, Brenda Stevens Smith, Judy Stevens Adair, Yvonne Lewis Dower, Lisa Lewis Birkinbine, Johnny Lewis; Jeannie Lewis; Audrey Lewis Rhoden; Marylinda Lewis Cox; Gary Godwin; Ricky Lee Godwin; Karen Godwin West; Pam Godwin Watson; Terri Godwin Anderson; Blaine Barnes; Teresa Barnes Boyd; and many more friends and loved ones.
