Joel DeLong was the last of nine children born to Sarah "Sally" Ann Armstrong and Francis DeLong of Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

Joel married Mary Elizabeth Makepeace in Mercer County Pennsylvania on December 21, 1871. From this marriage were born nine known children: Mary, Thomas See, Sarah Elizabeth, Charles, Matthew, William, Alice, Mae and Elmer Ellsworth. All but Thomas were born in Brisbin, Clearfield County. Thomas was born in Mercer County, PA. (Sometime between 1872 and 1874 the family moved from Mercer County to Clearfield County, PA...no known reason)

In the 1870 U.S. Census Record it lists Joel's occupation as a laborer, and in 1880 he worked as a coal miner. The remainder of his working days were spent as a farmer.

No Civil War or pension records have been found for Joel since he would have been only 15 years of age in 1865, but a family member does have a photo supposedly of him with a G.A.R. regiment.
