John, was the fourth of nine known children born to Francis and Sarah Ann Armstrong DeLong of New York.

He married Rachel Shingledecker in 1850 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. They had ten children: Sarah, Mary L., Matilda, William Alexander, Martha Eleanor, Adam Hutchison, George B., Alice Mattie, Andrew James and Thursey Bell. His wife Rachel died in 1869.

He married a second time to Rebekah Reagle Cozad in 1870. Rebekah's first husand Henry Cozad left her after the Civil War because he had another family. Rebekah and John had three children, Edward James, John Arthur and Charles Washington Delong.

The census records show John's occupations as being a carpenter and a farmer. It appears he did not serve in the Civil War, but a Civil War Draft registration has been located with his name listed.
