Sidney was the last of Rev. Francis & Isabella (Priestley) Bowman's nine children. His father was a Baptist minister who was well known and respected throughout Newton Co, MO and was closely associated with the Newtonia Baptist Church.

They lived in Newtonia, Mo when he was born on February 7, 1877. The following year his mother died on Nov. 26. His siblings were Monroe Bentley, Edgar C. (died at age 2), Walter L., Oliver Sheridan, Hattie A., Fleming Evert, and Earle Wayland. The children's births were from 1859 to 1877 including Sidney.

On April 11, 1880, his father married Martha Elizabeth "Lizzie" Mize in Newtonia. She was a teacher and later worked with her sisters, who were editors of the Newton County News in Newtonia. Sidney had celebrated his third birthday two months months before his father married his new step-mother.

They were living in El Paso, TX when his half sister, Gertrude "Grace," was born on January 27, 1886. They had returned to Newtonia when his father died on November 5, 1888. Sidney was a young boy of 11 and was left in the care of his step-mother.

Sidney was in Salt Lake City when the following article from The Newton County News was published on Jan 16, 1896:
"Elder S. Bowman, son of Elder F. M. Bowman, who will be remembered by the citizens of this place, as his early boyhood was spent here, is now editing the Church Review, a paper in pamphlet that gives the news each week of the several churches and religious societies in Sal Lake City, Utah. He issued a neat and handsome historical edition on December 29th, which contained 74 pages. It contains cuts of all the leaders in each church and religious society and cuts of many of the church buildings. It was quite a creditable edition and speaks well for the enterprise of its publisher."

He was 21 years old when he married Alice "Mercy" Robinson on July 31, 1898, in San Francisco. Mercy, who was almost five years older than him, was from a Mormon family who lived in Salt Lake City; her father was one of the workers who had helped with the design and woodwork on the Salt Lake Temple.

On June 6, 1900, Sidney & Mercy were living in Salt Lake City where he had a job as a compositor in printing. They had a one year old daughter, Paloma. Mercy's brother 30 year old brother, Joseph Robinson, was living with them. He was a U.S. soldier and had served in Manila.

On April 26, 1910, they still lived in Salt Lake City where Sidney worked as a mail carrier. By this time they had two more children, Frank age 8, and 8 month old Grace. The census record showed another child had died.

Sometime later they were divorced. On Jan. 9, 1920 Sidney was living in Pendleton, Umatilla Co, OR where he had a job as an assistant Post Master. He had married a widow, Ethel M (Kincaid) Warren. Her husband, Henry Miles Warren, had died on December 14, 1917, leaving her with two sons to raise. Ethel, about 8 years younger than Sidney, had a job as a proprietor of a music store. Her son, Lindsay was 10, and Robert was 6.

At some point in time (shown in his first wife's obituary) he was a district judge for eastern Oregon and a grand master of the Oregon District, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

On April 5, 1930 they owned a home in Pendleton. Sidney, age 52, was the secretary of the IOOF Lodge. Ethel no longer worked. Her son, Robert, who was 17 lived with them.

Sidney died in Pendleton on June 7, 1950. The date Ethel died is unknown.
