Mary E. Parkhurst died at the Chadron Community Hospital March 14, 2001 at the age of 92. She was born on March 31, 1908 at the ranch south of Valentine to Williams and Catherine Ballard. She attended school in both Wood Lake and Chadron, graduating from the Prep school in 1927. She married Ellsworth Morgan and they had a daughter Shirley Mae who survives. She built the Dunes Motel in Valentine and ran it for 40 years. After selling the motel she moved to the assisted living facility in Chadron to be near her daughter and family. She is survived by her daugher and son in law Shirley and Donald Kay, her grandaughter Patricia Blundell and husband Marvin; her grandson David Kay and wife Cheryl; also six great grandchildren, Angela Kuiper and her husband Mike of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike and Jay Blundell of Hay Springs, Elizabeth Kay of Lincoln, NE, and Kristen and Catherine Kay of Chadron. Other survivors include her sisters Ruth Fritz and Helen Eatinger of Valentine, brothers Lynn Ballard of Sims, AR, James Ballard of Las Vegas, NV, and John Ballard of Hemet, CA. Also a sister in law Margaret Ballard of Valentine and numberous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Monday March 19, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. CST at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wood Lake, NE with Marvin Blundell officiating.
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron, NE in charge of arrangements.
