Edward W. Ballard was born January 2, 1904 near Oasis in Cherry County, Nebraska, to William and Catherine Richardson Ballard. He attended elementary school at the Oasis School and was graduated from Wood Lake High School with the class of 1924. E. W. enjoyed education all of his life. He was a teacher in Cherry and Sheridan Counties for many years. He furthered his education repeatedly at Chadron Normal School during the summer and also worked on his family ranch south of Valentine. Although E. W. never married he was interested in the education of all young people. He did not enjoy radio or TV but was an avid letter writer. He had a real love for reading. Mr. Ballard had a real affection for the Masonic Lodge and held the Jordan Medal at the time of his death with the Wood Lake Masonic Lodge. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Valentine and was an active member. E. W. was preceded in death by his parents and 11 brothers and sisters. He is survived by three sisters, Mary Parkhurst, Ruth Fritz and Helen Eatinger all of Valentine, three brothers, Lynn of Arkansas, James of Nevada and John of California. Funeral servics were held Friday, July 7, 2000, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Valentine, with Fr. Scott Rathman officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wood lake with the Wood Lake Masonic Lodge in charge of the graveside rites. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines of Valentine was in charge of the furneral arrangements.
