James Ernest Abell, 68, of Ithaca, beloved husband of Joan Abell, dear father and grandfather died Tuesday, May 20, 1997 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Ithaca with Father John Ederer officiating. Burial will be in the Ithaca Cemetery. Friends may wish to consider the kidney Foundation of Gratiot County for memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Abell.

Mr. Abell was born June 2, 1928 in Loretto, Ky, the son of Thomas E. and Nettie M. (Mattingly) Abell. He married Joan Peet on January 6, 1951 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Ithaca.

James was an avid golfer, loved gardening, collecting ball caps, and was known by his family and friends for his joke telling. He especially enjoyed his half cup of coffee on his morning trips around town. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He retired in 1987 after 38 years as an operating engineer out of Local #324. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; four sons, Tom (Gloria) Abell of Alma, Jim (Betty) Abell of Breckenridge, Joe (Tina) Abell of Sumner, and Jerry (Teresa) Abell of Ithaca; three daughters, Linda (Rod) McDonald of Ithaca, Mary (Gary) Howerton of Lansing, and Julie Abell of Ithaca; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Joseph Abell; five sisters, Pauline Greenwell, Margaret West, Dorothy Mattingly, Jeanette Bradshaw, and Ann Southall, all of Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Joan and Deborah; his
parents; two brothers, William and Louis Abell; and two sisters, Catherine Cox and Cecilia Wright.
