Q. EDWARD GATLIN, STATE WPA HEAD, DIES AT JACKSON
Funeral Monday for Self-Educated Mississippian
JACKSON. Miss., Aug. 18 (AP)
Death came Sunday only twelve hours after a heart attack to Q Edward Gatlin. 36-year-old Mississippi Works Project Administrator. A short time before suffering the attack Gatlin had been on duty in his office. A native of Sandersville and orphaned at 16, he pushed his own education and studied at the former Chickasaw college at Pontotoc, Bowling Green Business university, the University of Alabama and Vanderbilt university. He served for a time as principal of the Mobile, Ala., Business college and as a department head of the Mississippi State Board of health He succeeded Roland U. Wall as state WPA administrator and had emphasized wartime programs such as scrap collection, in which a recent compilation showed Mississippi with the country's best record. Funeral services were held at Sandersville Monday. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Frieda, 12. a brother Melton, of Sandersville, and three sisters, Mrs. Charles Gunn of
Hattiesburg. Mrs. Frank McLendon of Meridian; Mrs. Harrison Simmons of Sandersville.
