Joseph D. Brasher, son of Probate Judge Jos. M. Brasher, of this city, died at the home of the latter Wednesday at twelve o'clock, noon, after a short illness due to inflammatory rheumatism and pneumonia. He was taken ill about a week previously at his home at Cottonwood Point and was removed to his father's home in this city two or three days before his death occurred.
Mr. Brasher was yet a young man, being a little less than 34 years of age. He was married and leaves a family of two or three children in addition to his wife, and for some years past had been engaged in farming and stockbreeding on his place at Cottonwood. He was a man of exemplary habits, and an excellent citizen and one whom any man might well take pride in being called his friend. His death came as a sudden shock not only to the immediate relatives but to his large circle of friends, comparatively few of whom knew of or realized the gravity of his illness.
Funeral services are being conductd this afternoon at the residence of Judge Brasher on West Eighth street, the hour being set at one o'clock, with the Rev. Elmer peal in charge. Interment will be at Little Prairie cemeetry, at which place the Masonic order of this city, of which the deceased had been a member for some years, will conduct appropriate rites. The family and relatives of the deceased have the heartfelt sympathy of all our townspeople in their hour of grief and in common with these The Democrat-Argus joins in extending sincere condolence.
A more extended obituary concerning Mr. Brasher will appear in an early issue of this paper.

JOSEPH DAVID BRASHER
The death of David Joseph Brasher, son of Judge J.M. and Mary Brasher on December 13th, was the occasion of great sorrow to his many friends as well as to the many friends of his honored father. There is not perhaps, a better known man in the county than Judge Brasher. He came to this county Jan. 18, 1872 and settled at Cottonwood Point and has lived here ever since. Judge Brasher was associate and presiding County Judge for one term each. He is just finishing his fourth term as Representative in the State Legislature. Doubtless his many friends and acquaintances suffer with him as he goes through the valley of shadows and grief incident to the death of his son.
Joseph David Brasher was born Sept. 14, 1888, died Dec. 13, 1922. He had been ill only a short time and was brought to his father's home so that every possible attention could be given him.
He was married to Ione Evelyn Smith, at Charleston, Mo., August 22, 1917. Their wedded life was indeed a happy one and in this hour of sorrow her many friends tender their sympathy assuringly saying "Earth has no sorrow heaven cannot heal."
Joseph was educated in the schools here and at Cottonwood Point. He was graduated from the High school in 1907. The members of his class are sad because his going seems untimely. He was a good student and was respected both by the faculty and the student body. He was a student at the Gem City Business College in 1910, and was a graduate of that institution.
He united with the Methodist church when but a boy, being about sixteen years old. He lived a faithful Christian life and was devoted to all the activities of his church. Joe, following in the footsteps of his honored father, joined the Masonic Lodge at Caruthersville. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Chapter and was held in high esteem by the membership of both bodies. For many years he was a member of the Elks. These fraternal affiliations certainly indicate the worth of his character--accepted by those who are as good men as ordinarily can be found in any community.
The funeral services were held at his father's home last Friday afternoon by the writer. The music was under the direction of Mrs. Chas. L. Cunningham, of the Methodist church. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, another mark of the esteem in which Joe was held by his neighbors and friends.
At the grave the last rites were solemnized by the Masons. The white apron and sprig of evergreen were deposited in the open grave, the symbols of faith and immortality. Our hearts were greatly stirred, and may we, all of us, so live "That when the summons comes to join the inumerable caravan, which moves to that mysterious realm, where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, thou go not like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."
