William F. Butler Sr. was the son of William Butler (b. 1794 in Hillam, Yorkshire, England) and Sarah Longbottom (b. 1799 in Yorkshire, England). William Jr. emigrated to the United States of America with this siblings and parents by sailing on the Montezuma of the Black Ball line, and landing in New York on May 31, 1844. From there the Butler family moved to Lisbon, Wisconsin and acquired 120 acres of land, becoming one of the first pioneer farm families in the area. On December 4, 1846, William married fellow British immigrant, Agnes Graham Davidson. Together they had twelve children. William Butler was a hard working farmer, beloved father, and beloved husband of 55 years.
