She is survived by three sons, William H. Jr. of Quincy, James E. (JoAnn) of Pleasant Plains and George of Athens; daughter, Beverly (Merle) Williams of Cantrall; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Powell of Springfield and Delbert Powell of Bloomington; three sisters, Harriet Donley of Springfield, Helen Hawkins of Springfield and Genevieve Sanderfield of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ruth was born on Feb. 14, 1915, in Athens, Illinois, the daughter of Cole Everett and Eunice Myrle Roberts Powell. She married William Henry Dyer in 1934, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1981. Ruth was the oldest of 16 siblings with six brothers, four sisters and her parents preceding her in death.
She loved to cook, garden, fish and especially spoil her grandchildren. Ruth worked in housekeeping at Memorial Medical Center for 16 years. She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Visitation will be held from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens. Graveside services will be held immediately following the visitation at Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens with Bill Carson officiating.
