Charles Mathis Leach was the son of Martha (Mattie) Shirley and John G. Leach. Over the years family stories were always shared at family reunion of the man family his children called "Papa". He was gone long before any of his grandchildren could ever know him. But hearing the stories about him we knew he was stern and strict to his children, but he was also a loving man. He was also a Christian man, they were faithful members of the First United Methodist Church.

It seems that Charles Leach had a bit of gypsy blood in him. Whither it was the fact he was never happy where he was living or if it was due to the fact he needed to move to find work he moved his family every few years. The family never knew when they would come home from school to find they were moving to a new town or many cases s new state.

As much as they moved Charles or "Charlie" as he was known always insisted that his children have an education and he expected them to excel in school lessons even though they were in and out of school sometimes for months due to a move or helping with farm chores. Four of the 10 children went on to be teachers and if I'm not mistaken everyone of them continued their education by attending college. One child died at age two.

Charles Leach himself taught school at one point. That was where he met and married his young student, our grandmother Agnes Gertrude Mauzey Leach. Other than teaching he was a farmer.

Charles Leach died in 1940, shortly after they had moved to Fort Worth, Texas. So after years of moving his family from Texas to Oklahoma to Arkansas and back to Texas and Oklahoma several times my mom and her younger sister who were still young were able to stay in one place and never move again. Even though our grandmother had never complained when they moved all those many years, they said she was so happy to finally have a little house and not have to pack up and move.
