John Martin Ramstad was the only surviving son of Peter Christian Ramstad (1848-1935) and Marie Gunhild Larsen Ramstad (1847-1901). Out of six children, only he and his sister Hilda Ramstad (1877-1928) survived into adulthood. He was born near Oslo, Norway on 14 May 1879 and emigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1880. He lived in Minneapolis for most of his adult life. He married Nelsine "Sena" Olava Borup (1882-1946), born in Wisconsin of Norwegian descent, in 1900 in Minneapolis. They had three children: Myrl Peter Ramstad (1901-1959), Violet Ellen Ramstad Crellin (1907-1987), and Glenn Christian Ramstad (1911-1933). Census records show that John worked as a street car conductor, and later shoe cutter for many years, while Sena minded the house keeping. He was a grocer in later life. John died from coronary thrombosis on 4 January 1945, and was interred at Hillside Cemetery in northeast Minneapolis. He was 65 years old.
