Violet Ellen Ramstad was born 1 February 1907 in Faribault, Minnesota to John Martin Ramstad (1879-1945), a Norwegian immigrant, and Nelsine "Sena" Borup Ramstad (1882-1946), born in Wisconsin of Norwegian descent. Her brothers were both born in Minneapolis. Her older brother was Myrl Peter Ramstad (1901-1959), a farmer, and her younger brother, Glenn Christian Ramstad (1911-1933) was tragically killed in an automobile accident in Minneapolis when he was 21 years old. She attended business school after graduating from high school. She married an English immigrant in Chicago, IL, Stanley Roy Crellin (1904-1979) around 1928. According to the April 1930 census, they lived in Chicago where Roy Crellin worked as a hotel clerk and Violet worked as a stenographer for an insurance company. They had two children who were both born premature and died within hours after being born. Baby Girl Crellin was born and died on 9 August 1929, and Baby Boy Crellin was born 11 October 1930 and died on the 12th. Violet and Roy were divorced within a few years (he would remarry in 1940). She lived in Braham, MN and Osseo, MN with her brother Myrl for several years, and by 1940 was living in San Francisco, CA. She was living in French Camp, CA (near Stockton) when Myrl died in 1959. Sadly, beginning as a teenager, Violet suffered from bouts of acute schizophrenia throughout her adult life, which often left her unemployed. During one period of recovery, "Aunt Vi" came and visited her only nephew, Rev. Peter Ramstad and his wife Bev and family in Minnesota in September 1964. It was the last time she visited with any extended family. She lived most of the rest of her life in virtual seclusion until her death in Stockton, CA on 15 October 1987 at the age of 80. Her ashes were buried alongside her brother & sister-in-law Myrl & Ruth Ramstad at Niggler Cemetery in Osseo, MN.
