Ruth (Briggs) Newcombe Member of Huntingdon Presbyterian Church
Ruth (Briggs) Newcombe, 90, formerly of 521 14th St., Huntingdon, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Homewood Retirement Center in Martinsburg. Born Aug. 12, 1914, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late Robert M. and Della (Dean) Briggs. She was united in marriage to James I. Newcombe Oct. 8, 1936, at the Presbyterian Church in Huntingdon by Dr. Daubenspeck. Mr. Newcombe preceded her in death May 13, 1985. She is survived by a son, James I. Newcombe Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Williamsburg. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by three sisters, Anna, Helen and Dorothy Mae, and two brothers, Robert and Richard. Mrs. Newcombe was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Huntingdon, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, secretary/treasurer, trustee and deacon. She was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program, as well as the Red Cross Bloodmobile. She graduated from Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1932 and served as secretary for Dr. Burgess Smith, as well as Dr. Steele and Dr. Hutchinson, all of Huntingdon. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, 508 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, with the Revs. Richard Gardiner and Harold Williams officiating. Interment will be made in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, R.R. 1. Friends may call at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Newcombe to the Presbyterian Church, 508 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, PA 16652. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon.
