Born in Lokcza, Arva, Hungary (which is now in Slovakia), James immigrated to the US May 21, 1907 from Bremen, Germany. He settled in Chicago and worked in a steel foundry, chemical works plant and even in a car shop. In 1908 he married Veronica Elena Matejcik. Together they had ten children: Joseph Eugene, John Julius, Helen Barbara, James G., Mary Veronica, Steven Eugene, Andrew R., Josephine "Finka", Anna Therese "Honey", and Richard Peter.
