She and Thomas attended Little River Baptist Church in Bumpass where they took an active role in all of the activities.
In 1983 their grandson returned from being stationed in Korea with his new wife, their baby and his wife's 3-yr old daughter. Thomas, Rita, the grandson and his new family were on their way into town when their car was struck by a flat bed tractor trailer on Route 33 in Hanover County, sadly killing Thomas and their 3 month old great-granddaughter Stefanie Yong Hodge.
After spending weeks in the hospital with life threatening injuries, she made a remarkable recovery, and exceeded all of the doctors' expectations. She went on to marry again many years later. She and her new husband were together 5 years until his death in 1999.
The remainder of her life was spent in Knoxville, TN with her daughter and family. She became ill and died from complications during gall bladder surgery at the age of 83.
