Thora Elizabeth Jessen Nikolaisen (1851-1931) had been a seamstress for the Danish royal family during the reign of King Christian IX. Thora's mother, Marie Jessen, had been a dressmaker in Denmark.
In 1890, Thora, her husband, Jens Peter Nikolaisen, and their seven children immigrated to American and then anglicized their surname to "Nicholson." They eventually settled in Geary County and began to farm.
