Born July 7, 1923 in Oak Hill, IL. Son of Matthew Ethem and Margaret Fail Smith. He married Catherine Ann Davis-Torres. She preceded him in death. He married Barbara Jean Jones August 6, 1960, in Quincy, IL. She survives.
Attended Lincoln Home School in Lincoln, IL and then served in the Army during World War II with the 109th Platoon in the Pacific Theater. He was retired from Electric Wheel in Quincy.

Funeral services were at 10:00am Thursday, November 20, 2003, in Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon by Pastor Russell Corrigan. Burial was in Mendon Cemetery with military detail by Bear Creek American Legion. Pallbearers were Larry Houghton, Red Gravitt, Gordon Hultz Sr., Gordon Hultz Jr., Greg Cramsey and Charles Barnes.

Passed away at 10:09 a.m. Sunday November 16, 2003, in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, IL.
