Sarah Elizabeth Dewitt was the eldest child of Aaron H. Dewitt (1810-1878) and Lucinda A. Hash (1815-abt1862). She was born in Green County, Kentucky in what is now Taylor County.


On 13 January 1859 she married Samuel Sutherland Allen. He was 23 and she was 22 years of age. They were parents of two children; Milton David Allen (1860-1937) and my grandmother, Laura Ermine Allen (1862-1924).


On November 5, 1861, Sam Allen enrolled in the U. S. Army. He was mustered in on Dec 30 1861 at Camp Hobson near Greensburg, Kentucky. At the time of his enlistment, Sarah was pregnant with Laura who was born on 4 February 1862. On the 14th of February the 13th Kentucky Infantry marched to the south to fight in the battle of Shiloh.

Sam survived that battle and other skirmishes but on December 14, 1863, Corporal Sam Allen was captured by the rebels. He was taken to belle Island, Virginia, a prisoner of war camp.


Sam Allen was among the first prisoners to be transported to Andersonville Prison, arriving there on February 10, 1864 , already in a weakened condition. On March 22, he was listed in the hospital. He died at Andersonville on April 3, 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea. He is buried in the National Cemetery there, Grave no. 329. Along with nearly 13,000 others.


When Sam did not return from the Civil War, Sarah remarried. She married her first cousin, William Robert Hash on 22 August 1866. William R. Hash did not take the two children, Milton and Laura. They were taken in by Sam Allen's parents and raised by them.


Sarah and William R had at least 9 children. Arabelle (1867); Ruth Ann (1868); Melvina P. (1870); John Henry (1872); Thomas Jefferson (1874); Sarah G. (1876); Mary G. (1876); William Grant (1879); and James Arthur Hash (1881).


Sarah Dewitt Hash died 24 January 1887 and is buried in Hash Cemetery No. 2.

After she died William R. Hash married again to Lou Ellen Cheltz on 7 September 1887. They had two more children: Katie E. Hash (1888) and Robert E. Hash (1891)


Her headstone shows her middle initial A. (Allen, her first marriage) Her middle name was Elizabeth.
