Laura E. Allen was a daughter of Samuel Sutherland Allen and Sarah Elizabeth Dewitt. She was born 4 Feb 1862. She had an older brother, Milton David Allen, b. 24 Jun 1860.
Samuel Allen had enlisted in the Army just 3 months before Laura was born. He was captured by the Confederates during the Civil War and was sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 3 April 1864.
When Samuel Allen did not return from the war, her mother, Sarah Dewitt Allen remarried to William Robert Hash on 22 August 1866. To this union most all the Hash's of Taylor County, Kentucky can trace their ancestry. When Sarah married W. R. Hash, he apparently did not take her two children and they were raised by their grandparents, William Jefferson and Elizabeth Pickerell Allen.
Laura married 12 December 1877 to Franklin D. Jones. He was 21 and she was 16 years of age. Their daughter, Jennie Viola Jones was born November 1879. Around 1881 or so, Franklin seems to have disappeared. He either died or was killed. I have never known and have been unable to determine what happened to him.
It was a short time to 2 March 1882 when Laura married again to John Charles Huber. Again, as happened to Laura when she was small, Jennie was apparently not taken into the marriage by J. C. Huber. She was given out to the family of Lloyd and Lizzie Cole Wallace to raise. This couple had no children of their own and they adopted Jennie. They are buried in Buffalo Cemetery. Jennie married Exodus Skaggs on 15 May 1899 and they left Kentucky. They first went to Illinois and then moved westward. They both died in California and are both buried there.
J. C. and Laura Huber remained in LaRue County and lived near the Pleasant Ridge Community. They had 11 children. Some died young and are buried here in Corinth Cemetery. Laura died in 1924 and J. C. died in 1931.
Laura's brother, Milton Davie Allen died in 1937 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

LAURA'S FIRST BORN:

Jennie Viola Jones was born 1879 according to the 1880 Census for the community of Raywick in Marion County, Kentucky. That is where she and her parents lived at the time. The census taker gave her name as Mary J. Jones, age 1 year.

She was the daughter of Franklin D. and Laura Ermine Allen Jones who married on 12 December 1877 in LaRue County, Kentucky. I am certain Frank Jones died shortly after 1880. Circumstances indicate he either died of natural causes or was killed. No record has been found of his death or burial location.
Frank Jones was an illegitimate son of Nancy Jane Thompson (1823-aft 1880). He had two brothers, Hiram and Henry, and one sister, Mary Polly Jones. Hiram died young and Henry married Bettie Green Nelson. He is buried in the Levelwoods Methodist Church cemetery in LaRue County. Mary Polly Jones married Willam Nelson in 1875 and they are buried in the Nelson Family Cemetery in Taylor County, Kentucky. Frank's mother, Nancy Jane Thompson had previously married William Thompson in 1845 and they were the parents of Jack Thompson (1845-1929), James Thomas (Big Jim) Thompson (1849-1924), and Caroline Thompson, b. 1853. Nancy married again in 1870 to John Hash and died before 1900. She is buried in the old Sandlick burying Ground in Green County.

After Frank died, Laura Ermine Allen (my grandmother) married again on 2 March 1882 to John Charles Huber. Many time in these situations the children were not taken by the new husband. They would be adopted out or simply "given away," This happen to Jennie. She was adopted by Lloyd Wallace (1845-1897) and his wife, Elizabeth F. Cole Wallace (1846-1925).
LaRue County Herald, Thursday, May 6, 1897:
Lloyd Wallace of Buffalo, died last Thursday of pneumonia at the age of 53 years. Married Miss Elizabeth Cole about 30 years ago. She survives him. Also leaves an adopted daughter, Miss Jennie, brother, David Wallace and 2 sisters, Mrs. Margaret Hayes of Hodgenville and Mrs. Marion Booker of Missouri.
Jennie's birth name of Mary V. Jones was changed to Jennie Viola Wallace when she was adopted.
On 15 May 1899 in LaRue County, Kentucky, Jennie married Exodus Skaggs. He was 28 and she was 20 years of age.

After Jennie and Exodus married, they lived a short while in LaRue County, Kentucky and their first child, Paul Albert Skaggs was born there in 1901. They moved to Bureau County, Illinois where Clarence (1908) and Blanch (1909) were born. Their 4th child, Robert LaRue Skaggs, was born 1913 in Erie, Illinois. The family moved west. In 1920 they were in Johnson County, Iowa, where Exodus worked as a Garage Mechanic. They eventually moved on to California and remained there. Exodus died in 1934 (see Find-a-grave memorial #70901154). Jennie married again to a Mr. Smith and died 1960 in Los Angeles. (FAG #62297006)

Jennie had the following half-siblings:

1. Sarah Elizabeth Huber (1883-1957) m. Joseph William Nugent and died in Springfield, Ill.
2. Dora A. Huber (1885-1887) Died at age 2 years. Buried in Corinth Cemetery, LaRue Co.
