Death of John Donegan

Brother of Mrs. Dr. M. H. Cleary Dies in Montana

A copy of the Madisonian, of Virginia City, Montana, has been received at this office containing particulars of the death of Hon. John Donegan, which sad event occurred recently. The decedent was a brother of Mrs. Dr. M. H. Cleary of this city, and made Galena his home in early days. Death resulted from a paralytic stroke which overtook the deceased while on his ranch near an irrigating ditch where it is presumed he went to look after the flow of water, and where he was found by his daughter. He was still alive but unconscious, and expired a few minutes after being removed to his home. The Madisonian says:

"John Donegan was born near Slane County Meath, Ireland, December 10, 1836, and remained there until 1851, when he came to the United States with his parents and eight brothers and sisters. On arriving at New York his fatter established a brick yard opposite Stony Point which he conducted until 1857 when the family removed to Galena, Ill., where John Donegan, who preceded the family, had established a beef and pork packing house. In 1863-4, the gold fever, Ben Holliday's coach and a Mormon train took him across the plains to Alden gulch where he arrived April 4, 1864, at a time when there was only one cabin between Box Elder, Utah, and Dempsey's ranch on the Stinkingwater. Here he was employed by the California company at $7 per day, until the fall of 1864 when with the late Stephen Cahill, Sr., he bought into mining ground at Elkhorn Bar, Nevada mining district. In 1866, together with General Thomas F. Meagher and others, he purchased the first Catholic church at Virginia City for the use of Father Giorda. In 1865 he was elected a member of the house of representatives of the territorial legislature on the Democratic ticket, and was re-elected in 1867, his service being marked by honesty and industry. In the early seventies he left the Democratic party and became a Republican in which party he was a prominent worker up to the time of his death. In 1877 he removed from Alder gulch to his farm on the upper Ruby valley, where he has since resided. He was married inAugust, 1868 to Miss Mary Crowley, a native of Monroe, Michigan, who died January 13, 1883. He is survived by four children, Mrs. Kate Funk and Mrs. Agnes Garrison of Adobetown; Miss Mollie Donegan of Pulier Springs, and John C. Donegan of Sheridan. Another daughter, Miss Julia Donegan, formerly superintendent of schools of this county, died January 8, 1905. A sister, Miss Bridget Donegan, resides in Butte, and he has other relatives in Galena, Ill."
