Florence was the daughter of Seth Griffith & Susan (Cork) Hyland & she grew up in Jerome Township, Union County, OH. Florence was known primarily by her nickname "Nettie" but, prior to her marriage, she was often referred to as "Babe" Hyland. On October 30, 1887, Nettie was married to Charles Howard Dort in Union County. Nettie & Charles lived on a family farm in Jerome Township & can be found there on the 1910 & 1920 federal censuses. On the 1910 Census, Nettie stated that she had parented eight children, four of whom were still living as of April 15, 1910. Four of those children are listed on 1910 Census, but only three of the names are legible: Curry D. Dort, Richmond Dort, & Francis D. Dort (also buried at Jerome Township Cemetery). The names of the four children who had died prior to April 15, 1910, remain a mystery. (A small "generic" marker adjacent to Nettie's marker denotes that the "children of C. H. & F. M. Dort" are buried there.) Following the 1927 death of husband Charles, Nettie moved to the nearby household of youngest son Francis & she can be found living there at the time of the 1930 Federal Census.
