Veartrice "Vea" Verrill, 100, of Smithwood Drive died Monday at Coastal Manor in Yarmouth after a long illness.

She was born in Livermore, a daughter of Howard P. and Nettie Richards Berry, and attended Livermore schools.

She married Chester Verrill in 1918 and moved to Cumberland, where they owned a horse and cattle farm for many years. Mrs. Verrill raised turkeys on the farm as a hobby, which later turned into a business. They sold 3,000 turkeys during the holidays on her best year. She also made turkey pies for suppers at Cumberland Congregational Church and Grange Hall.

As a young women, she designed and trimmed women's hats.

During World War II, she worked at the shipyards in South Portland.

For many years, she assisted Drs. Henry Hanson and William Freeman with the deliveries of babies.

She also grew and sold vegetables door to door in Portland.

Her interests included quilting, tatting, crocheting and painting. At age 90, she painted watercolor scenes on Christmas cards for her friends. She also made hand-braided rugs and exhibited them at the Cumberland Fair for more than 40 years.

She and her husband spent many winters in Florida during their retirement. Mr. Verrill died in 1976.

As the oldest resident in North Yarmouth, she held the Boston Post gold-headed cane. At age 95, she was chosen to be grand marshal of the parade at North Yarmouth's annual Funday.

Mrs. Verrill was a member of the Ladies Circle and was a former member of the North Livermore Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Richard H. of Yarmouth, Dwight C. of North Yarmouth and Randall B. of Gray and St. Cloud, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. William (Gloria) Sanborn of Cumberland and Mrs. Sidney (Norma) Smith of North Yarmouth; a sister, Louise Jones of West Paris; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great- grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, with the Rev. Gil Healy officiating. Private burial will be in Moss Side Cemetery, Cumberland.
