Jesse Newton Fikes Jr., 78, of Pine Bluff, died April 9, 2003, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

He was born December 1, 1924, at Grapevine, a son of the late J.N. Fikes and Lucy B. Bryles Fikes.

He was reared at Pine Bluff and graduated from Pine Bluff High School.

He owned Fikes Furniture and Radio Services in Pine Bluff for 40 years and retired in 1986. Prior to opening his business, he was a professional baseball player with the New York Giants organization.

He was an active member of Watson Chapel Baptist Church. He was an ordained deacon and taught young people at both Greenlee Baptist Church and Watson Chapel Baptist Church .

He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Margie Hulse Fikes; two sons, Howard L. Fikes of Bryant and Ralph V. Fikes of San Antonio; two sisters, Nell West of Sulphur Springs and Evalee Hervey of Pine Bluff; and three grandchildren.
