An undated newspaper clipping: SERGEANT INJURED BY BOMBING JOINS WIFE AT DOUGLAS PLANT
Less than two weeks after he was discharged from the army because of a back injury received in the Sicilian campaign. Sgt. Raymond Earl Baccus joined his wife, Kathryn Baccus, 4901 S. Shields, at the Douglas plant..
Baccus puts rivets to the fuselage section of a C-47 now, but back in July, 1943, he was trucking gasoline with an armored division attached to the famous 45th. As he drove along one day, he was attacked by a German divebomber. His assistant driver was killed.
He was in a cast three months, discharged Jan. 14, 1944 and 13 days later went to work for Douglas. He is among several hundred discharged servicemen who are finding jobs they want at Douglas to help carry on the fight.
Baccus has two brothers in the service. Pfc. Marvin Baccus, stationed with the army in England
and Pfc. Willie Baccus, also in the army, stationed in the southwest Pacific. A step-brother, Marine Lieut. W. C. Spradling, Hollis, was killed in a plane crash last June somewhere in the south Pacific area

The family called him "Burl". According to his sister, Bertha, Raymond Earl's wife, Katie, had to put him in a nursing home because she couldn't keep him safe from harm. He wandered off by himself. Her health is very poor, too.
