John J. Basler

The sad news of the death of John J. Basler came as a shock to his many relatives and friends here on Wednesday as it was entirely unexpected. Mr. Basler had been troubled with rheumatism for several months but outside of this his health was as good as ever until Monday evening when he complained of pains in the region of his heart which rapidly increased in intensity until it was necessary for him to seek medical relief. His condition showed no improvement on Tuesday and he grew weaker. Wednesday noon he was able to eat a light dinner but began to fail shortly after and passed away at 1:30 o'clock p.m. His two daughters, Misses Hattie of Milwaukee and Elizabeth of Plymouth arrived home on Wednesday morning and were with him when he died.

The funeral will be held today, Saturday at St. Mary's church with interment in St. Mary's cemetery.

John J. Basler, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Basler was born in Austria on Dec. 17, 1850 and immigrated to this county with his parents at the age of three years, coming direct to Wisconsin and settling at Mequon, Ozaukee County. Here he grew to manhood, learning the blacksmith trade and on January 27th 1873, was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Barth. After marriage he and his bride took up their residence in Milwaukee where he followed the blacksmith trade, living there three years. Then they moved to Ellinwood, Kansas, where Mr. Basler purchased a farm and where they made their home for seven years. They sold their farm in Ellinwood in 1884, returning to Wisconsin and purchased a farm in Chilton town now owned by Mr. Basler's son, John M. Basler. They resided there until 1910 when they retired and took up residence in this city.

Mr. and Mrs. Basler are the parents of seven children, five sons; Claudius of Wilkes Barre, Pa., Frank of Hartford, John M., Chilton town, George of Calvary, Henry of Plymouth and two daughters, Misses Hattie and Elizabeth at home, all of whom, with his wife survive him. He is also survived by one brother, Frank, of this city and three sisters, Mrs. Peter Barth of Milwaukee, Mrs. Mary Schallmo of Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs. Jacob Veit of this city and thirty grandchildren and one great grandchild.
