Charles Andrew Baker, third son of the late Daniel Webster and Esther Anna Baker, was born near Benedict, Nebr., on March 23, 1883, and died at the Veterans' hospital in Lincoln on October 6, 1942, at the age of 53 years, 6 months and 13 days. For the past seventeen years he resided in Lincoln. He had been in failing health for several years and in the hospital for the past eleven months.


He was a corporal in Co. M, Nebraska National Guards at York, and served on the Mexican border prior to the entry of United States into World war 1. He was later transferred to Battery F, 127 Field Artillery and served three months overseas during the war.


Surviving are eleven brothers: Frank of Omaha, Ed of Kimball, Grant of Scottsville, Va., Ira of Enumclaw, Wash., Ray of Keenesberg, Colo., Clyde of Bradshaw, Oliver of Hordville, Will of Benedict, Pfc. Wayne of the 68th medical regiment, Nashville, Tenn. and one sister, Pearl of York. One sister, Mrs. Ella Harrington, preceded him in death on June 30, 1939.


J.K. Shapland, Howard Lytle, Harry Carlson, C.A. Folts, Frank Conkle and Henry Cross, lifetime friends of the deceased, served as pallbearers at the funeral services held on Friday, Oct. 9th, at 2:30 o'clock at the Metz chapel with Rev. E.M. Reed in charge of the service. Music was furnished by Earl Jenkins with Miss Eda Radkin at the piano. Interment was in Pleasant Hill cemetery near Benedict. R.E. Lunner, a member of Bolton post of the American Legion in York, sounded taps at the grave.

The long period of ill health from which Charles Baker of Benedict suffered, came to an end on Tuesday evening, October 6, at the Veteran's hospital in Lincoln where he had been cared for for some time.


Funeral services were held from the Metz chapel in York on Friday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. E.M. Reed, a friend of long standing.


Mr. Baker was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Baker, well known residents of the Benedict neighborhood and his death is mourned by his sister, Miss Pearl Baker and eleven brothers who are: Frank of Omaha, Ed of Kimball, Grant of Scottsville, Va., Ira, Enumclaw, Wash., Ray, Keenesburg, Colo., Clyde, Bradshaw, Oliver, Hordville, Will, Benedict, Earl, Saybrook, Ill., Floyd, Benedict and Wayne in the U.S. Army at Nashville, Tenn.


Becoming interested in the National Guards many years ago Mr. Baker served in the first World war, having overseas dutyy. He has lived in Lincoln for some years and was connected with the American Legion there. Many friends of boyhood and youth in this vicinity reret his death as well as the family and associates in Lincoln. Burial was made in the Pleasant Hill cemetery near Benedict.
