Essie Mae Strickland Dowling Roberson, 76, born 12 Feb 1920, a resident of Bayview Nursing Home in Nahunta, died, 28 Dec 1996, at the Charlton Memorial Hospital in Folkston.
A native of Wayne, now Brantley County, she was the daughter of the late Willie E. Strickland and Lottie Anderson Strickland. She was also preceded in death by her two husbands, Elbert Lee Dowling and James C. "Jim" Roberson, and her brother, James William Strickland. She was a member of the Philadelphia Wesleyan Church. She had resided at Bayiew Nursing Home in Nahunta for the past two years.
Survivors are two daughters, Barbara Palmer of Birmingham, AL and Betty J. Rueummler of Alabaster, AL; two sons, Jack S. Dowling Sr. of Nahunta and Willie J. Dowling of Chelsea, MA; two sisters, Inez Popwell and Florine S. Strickland, both of Hortense; three brothers, Elmer Dean Strickland of Melbourne, FL, Lawton Strickland and John L. Strickland, both of Hortense; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, from the Philadelphia Wesleyan Church with Rev. R. C. Mathis and Rev. Tim Rowell officiating. Burial was in Raulerson Cemetery near Patterson.
Pallbearers were Jerry Moody, Terry Moody, Stanley Dowling, Jerry Popwell, Kenny Popwell and Jay Ham.
Chambless Funeral Home of Nahunta was in charge of arrangements.
