David Dale Smith, 81, of Cabool, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2009, at his home in Cabool.

He was born on April 8, 1928 in Tarkio, Missouri, the son of the late James T. and Maude A. (Wall) Smith.

David grew up in Missouri before moving to Idaho and joining the Navy in December 1945. He was a seaman on the USS Harlan and USS Seminole and was honorably discharged in December 1947. He was honored with the World War II Victory Medal and the American Area Campaign Medal.

He was united in marriage to Betty Jean Miller on February 11, 1950 in Houston, Missouri, and to this union five children were born.

Through his years, David lived in Payette, Glens Ferry and Boise, Idaho; Spokane, Washington; Milton-Freewater, Oregon; and Fruitland, Idaho.

On March 6, 1997 he married Betty Lou Peabody and made his home in Cabool.

David worked many jobs in his lifetime. He worked in a shoe factory and for the railroad but he spent most of his working years driving a semi truck, until his retirement in 1993 at the age of 65.

David enjoyed the outdoors; he loved to hunt and fish and especially enjoyed traveling in his fifth wheel with his wife, Betty. They were "snowbirds," going to Arizona and Texas for the first part of the year. He was a great father, husband, grandfather, brother and everyone loved Uncle Dave. He enjoyed not only his family, but his acreage and putting around on his tractors. He was a very active member of Cabool Christian Church and will be greatly missed by everyone.

David was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters; five brothers; one daughter, Betty Dale Smith; and one stepson, Ronald E. Peabody.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou of the home, son, stepson, brother, 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two step grandsons and three step great-grandchildren.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at Cabool Christian Church with Bro. Bob Martin officiating. Pallbearers were Sam Mudd, Everett Beller, Robert Beller, Harold Bennett, Steve Pounds and David Rogers. Interment was in Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be given to Cabool Christian Church.
