She was the daughter of High Chief Kuhio Kalanianaʻole of Hilo & Princess Kekaulike Kinoiki of Kauaʻi.

She Became Queen Kapi'olani when her husband was elected King Kalakaua (Mo'i Kalakaua) of Hawai'i.

After the death of her beloved husband, Mo'i Kalākaua, Queen Kapiʻolani retired to her home in Waikīkī and died shortly after her husband.
